What to expect
  1. 1. Run FindingFreedomSetup.exe — no admin password required, installs in seconds.
  2. 2. Your browser opens a quick setup page. Create a free account and enter your ally's email.
  3. 3. Your ally receives an invitation email explaining FindingFreedom and how to create their account.
  4. 4. FindingFreedom runs silently in the background. Your ally gets an alert if you need support.
🤖 Installing on Android (sideload)

Android isn't on the Play Store yet, so you install the APK directly. It's quick and safe — the app is signed and downloaded straight from FindingFreedom.

  1. 1. Tap Download for Android above. Your browser saves FindingFreedom.apk.
  2. 2. Open the downloaded file. Android will ask to allow installs from this source — tap Settings, then turn on “Allow from this source” (Install unknown apps). This is normal for apps outside the Play Store.
  3. 3. Go back and tap Install, then Open.
  4. 4. Sign in, then grant the permissions the app asks for — Accessibility (detects flagged sites & searches), VPN (blocks explicit domains), Device Admin (tamper protection), and the battery exemption (keeps monitoring alive).
  5. 5. That's it. The app updates itself — when a new version ships it prompts you to download and install it. No Play Store needed.

🐧 Installing on Linux

One command, start to finish. It checks what your distribution is missing, installs into your home folder, and sets it to start automatically — no root for the app itself, nothing outside ~/.local.

Paste this into a terminal

curl -fsSL https://findingfreedom.app/install-linux.sh | bash -s -- --with-deps

--with-deps lets it install the one or two system packages it needs (it shows you the exact command and asks for your password). Leave it off and it will simply tell you what to run instead.

What that command does

  1. Checks you have Python 3.9+ and the venv module, and names the exact package to install if not.
  2. Warns you before installing if you are on Wayland, where screen monitoring cannot work.
  3. Downloads and verifies the release, then installs to ~/.local/opt/FindingFreedom.
  4. Registers a user service so it starts when you log in.
  5. Opens the setup page so you can sign in and add an ally.

Tested end to end on a clean Ubuntu 24.04.

If something goes wrong

  • "externally-managed-environment" — you are missing the venv package. Run the command the installer prints, then try again.
  • Nothing seems to be running — systemctl --user status findingfreedom
  • See what it is doing — journalctl --user -u findingfreedom -f
  • Start it by hand — ~/.local/opt/FindingFreedom/venv/bin/python -m platforms.linux.launch

Prefer to read it first? Download the tarball, extract it, and run ./install.sh yourself. To remove it later: ~/.local/opt/FindingFreedom/uninstall.sh (your allies are notified, as they are on every platform).

Important: use an Xorg (X11) session

Wayland deliberately blocks apps from capturing the screen or reading window titles, so on a Wayland session screenshot monitoring is disabled (private-browsing and tamper detection still work, and your ally is told the device is only partly protected). To get full protection: log out, click the gear icon on the login screen, and choose Xorg or X11. Most distributions still offer it. If you are unsure which you are on, run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE.
